Mentor Quality Matters: Supporting a Continuum of Teacher Development

  • Target Audience: P-12 cooperating teachers and building administrators in schools across Southeast Ohio.
  • Topics Include:
    • Definition and discussion of mentoring styles
    • Mentoring on the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession (OSTP)
    • Activities to facilitate reflection
    • Pre- and post- assessment of mentoring style

Appalachia from an Assests Perspective Conference

  • Building on the initial conference in Fall 2010, a second, more intensive conference will assist educators, administrators, and othere to understand the teachers of Appalachia as assets; as contributors to the culture of the region, as activists, and as resilient advocates for their students. The conference will examine historical trends and current conditions that underlie the economic circumstances that prevail in the region. The purpose of the workshop will be to help stakeholders understand teachees as assets of Appalachian culture and incorporate this understanding into products (e.g., lesson plans, policy statements) that have a direct bearing on their work.
  • Target Audience: P-12 teachers and administrators in schools across Southeast Ohio; Higher education faculty, staff, administrators, and students across the region are also welcome.

Ohio's Seven Standards for the Teaching Profession: Teacher Quality Matters

  • The Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession are the driving force for Ohio’s new Teacher Residency Program. Beginning September 12, 2011, the Southeast Ohio Teacher Development Collaborative (SEOTDC) is offering free online professional development modules that center on these seven standards. Self-paced modules encompass video excerpts of best practices, as well as participants communicating via “Blackboard” and interacting with the standards.   • Target Audience:  Middle school and high school teachers who are currently teaching or planning to teach Advanced Placement English Language & Composition

Advanced Placement Summer Institute - Biology

  • Target Audience:  Middle school and high school teachers who are currently teaching or planning to teach Advanced Placement Biology
  • AP Biology Summer Institute is an intense four-day course surveying the AP Biology curriculum. Selected content areas of the AP Biology curriculum will be highlighted. Participants engage in hands-on investigative laboratory activities covering the major AP recommended labs. In addition, participants learn how to start an AP Biology program at their school including the selection of students. Information on the AP Biology exam will be provided including the AP course audit and the scoring methods employed.

Quantifying Uncertainty and Analyzing Numerical Trends

  • Target Audience:  Mathematics teachers in Grades 7–12
  • QUANT (Quantifying Uncertainty and Analyzing Numerical Trends) is a yearlong professional development program for mathematics teachers in Grades 7–12 that explores data collection, data analysis, probability, and statistics using technology and inquiry as tools for teaching and learning.  The program is designed to give teachers activities and strategies for delivering Ohio’s data analysis and probability standard and the Common Core State Standards, and to help teachers develop rich lessons that meaningfully incorporate data and technology.  Participants will use hand-held computers and data collection devices, and will develop a plan to implement what they learn.  QUANT provides stipends, food, materials worth $400, and optional graduate credit at a reduced tuition rate.  Free room and board are available for participants who live more than 45 miles away.  For more information, visit http://www.cehs.ohio.edu/college-offices/dean-office/morton/QUANT.htm.

Modeling and Spatial Reasoning

  • Target Audience:  Mathematics teachers in Grades 7–12
  • Modeling and Spatial Reasoning (Modspar) is a yearlong professional development program for mathematics teachers in Grades 7–12 that explores discrete and continuous modeling, geometric modeling, and spatial reasoning using technology and inquiry as tools for teaching and learning.  The program is designed to give teachers activities and strategies for delivering Ohio’s Core Curriculum and the Common Core State Standards, and to help teachers develop lessons and 4th-year coursework alternatives to precalculus that incorporate data and technology in meaningful ways.  Participants will learn strategies for integrating cognitively demanding tasks, formative assessments, and linked representations into lessons, and will develop a plan to implement what they learn.  Modspar provides stipends, food, materials worth $400, and optional graduate credit at a reduced tuition rate.  Free room and board are available for participants who live more than 45 miles away.  For more information, visit http://www.cehs.ohio.edu/college-offices/dean-office/morton/Modspar.htm.
